I am from the Manor also. I played baseball across from the pool. I moved to the Manor in 1961 from Truxtun. My mother still lives there. Your site is awesome. Thanks

I really miss the "Manor." I grew up in Victory Manor and had a wonderful childhood exploring the neighborhood with my friends. No matter where I go I will ALWAYS be from the "MANOR."

I grew up in what used to be Victory Manor. My parents (now only 1) are the original homeowner since 1956. I attended Cavalier Manor (yes Calvin, I know EXACTLY how you feel), Highland Biltmore, Alf Mapp, Cradock and graduated in the first class of Manor with Nate McCall. For those of you old timers, I hope you remember my Father, the coach of Pilzers Little League (remember the Pilzers department store on High Street near Chestnut?) I went to many little league games at the field at Cavalier Manor Elementary. I could go on for hours with fond memories but this would become a novel...

I grew up at 708 Dorset Avenue, attended Cavalier Elementary (now demolished), Moffett Elementary, William E. Waters, Craddock High (1 year), and Woodrow Wilson (3 years - graduated 1972). I have been teaching, coaching, and playing music in the hill city since 1977. When I visit The Manor today so many things have changed, but memories still prevail. I visted years ago to take a picture of Cavalier Elementary for a book I was writing and the school no longer exists. There was no trace of it and my heart sank. The swimming pool is still in place even though the appearance has changed with the disappearance of the street leading to it. I realize progress always takes place, but why are the african american landmarks always destroyed. I also noticed that the original I.C. Norcom is no longer on the earth's surface either. I forgot to check on S.H. Clarke. I was aware that there was no more Academy Park and the mall has been replaced by the new shooping center look. Mid-City shopping center has vanished also. I share with all my students my experience of growing up in the "Manor" - once referred to as the "largest Negro subdivision in the state of Virginia."

To Buddy Sharpe, trying to help you out. You want some help, well I am bringing you help. I have at least 4 people who want to help you get things done in "The Manor". Want to start a Yard of the Month Program; Clean Business Recognition via the Portsmouth Clean Community Commission. Leander Knox is volunteering to be your Beautification Chair. We would like your civic league linked to the Commission. Mr. Knox wants to be the one to take the pressure off of you. Holla Back. Claudia

Hi cavalier manor ! I am reading an autobiography of Nathan McCall, Makes Me Wanna Holler. For a moment i felt like I am staying in Cavalier Manor. This place had been very well described in a book. I will definitely visit and explore C.M. when I will visit virginia !

Way to go!!! I'm proud to be a Portsmouth resident and see this. But you know I'm going to have Mt. Hermon step up the game and get one if not better.
